Is there too much flannel in our soaps?

Article Abstract:

There are strong indications in the UK that the soap opera as a genre is losing its direction, with audience levels falling. Plans to restructure the BBC's 'Eastenders' highlight the fact that soap operas can only be successful if they are kept small and simple. Their realism is based on their ability to present believable events in the lives of recognizable characters. Soap operas have been most effective when a character has been involved in promiscuity, adultery or attempts to escape family ties.

The career of television personality Jonathan Ross seems to have waned recently. He is greatly attracted to television and to money, but also genuinely prefers spending time with his family. In fact, he remains one of the most talented television personalities in the UK, and his career seems to be on the point of a revival. He is still the only talk-show host, apart from Michael Parkinson, to have a real interest in most of his guests.

Sex has become a common subject for television programmes in the UK. The UK is still a long way behind continental Europe in showing hardcore pornography on television, but sex scenes in mainstream programmes are becoming increasingly explicit. The UK's attitude towards pornography could eventually cause significant problems for the creation of a single European television market.
