Israel pillories UN worker
Article Abstract:
UN refugee affairs officer Katharine Striker, a 35-year-old American, witnessed the murder of an Israeli by Palestinians in Rafah, Gaza. She was unarmed in her car when she saw a mob in the main street. She tried to radio UN HQ, which has direct communications with the Israeli military authorities. As she failed to make contact, she drove to the nearest UN health clinic to telephone but the central switchboard was jammed. Israeli media accuse Ms Striker of failing to prevent the murder of Yehoshua Wiessbrod.

Suspicion is enough to condemn Arab homes
Article Abstract:
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin increased the destruction of homes in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Houses where Palestinian gunmen were believed to be hiding were blown up and families left homeless. People were accidentally shot during the operations. Families who denied harbouring gunmen may claim compensation, but only one has succeeded between July and Dec 1992. The UNRWA relief agency supplied tents for the homeless in Deir el-Balah.

Spanish armada sails as peace talks flounder
Article Abstract:
European officials are insisting that a peace deal cannot be reached with Canada over fishing rights until Canada releases a Spanish fishing vessel seized off its waters. The incident followed complaints from Canada that Spanish boats are seriously depleting Greenland halibut stocks off its coast. Europe is now trying to gain support for new fishing quotas in the north Atlantic.
