Israeli bombs shatter illusion of peace

Article Abstract:

The recent suicide bomb attacks in Jerusalem and Ashkelon, Israel, have dealt a very serious blow to the Middle East peace process. Israeli premier Shimon Peres has emphasised that the peace process must continue, but has also decided to break off all contacts with the Palestinians. The Israeli government's experience with Hamas, which was responsible for the bomb attacks, is very similar to that of the UK government with Sinn Fein and the IRA. Gerry Adams is seen as being in control of the IRA, while Palestinian president Yasser Arafat is seen as controlling Hamas. In neither case is this true.

A wasted chance for peace, if not love

Article Abstract:

It has appeared over recent years that there would be a good chance of establishing a lasting peace between Israel and its neighbours. Both Israelis and Palestinians had begun to appreciate the human cost of the conflict, and were taking a more positive view of peace. However, the opportunity for securing peace now seems to have vanished. New Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears to desire peace, but is not prepared to make any concessions and is taking an arrogant and belligerent approach.
