Article Abstract:

The car has played an extremely significant role in shaping 20th-century popular culture. It has radically changed the way people perceive space and time. Road films have consistently played a part in defining emergent social trends, while the car has also come to be at the centre of 20th-century art. In the 1950s, the car offered physical freedom, while in the 1990s it offers ideological freedom. It also represents sex and a form of communion with ourselves.

Article Abstract:

Public transport is associated with poverty and lack of freedom in the UK, while cars are seen as a sign of freedom and enjoyment. The country's cities and towns were created before the car culture arrived, so they will have to be completely rebuilt unless the car culture is going to be removed.
