KGB approved 1 million Irish pounds aid request by party with IRA link
Article Abstract:
The Workers' Party of Ireland sought 1 million Irish pounds from the Soviet Communist Party's Central Committee in 1986. The international department investigated the Workers' Party and decided that official surveillance by Great Britain and the US made it undesirable for them to give financial assistance. IRA campaigner Sean Garland appealed to KGB head Vladimir Kryuchkov who favoured co-operation. A Central Commmittee Top Secret Memorandum dated Jan 6, 1989 referred to the examination of Mr Garland's appeal.
