Labour's best future is in its past

Article Abstract:

The Labour Party should resurrect the tradition of fairness demonstrated by the original Independent Labour Party (ILP) founded in 1893 at a conference in Bradford, Yorkshire, England. It was formed mostly by trade unionists and rights for low-paid, non-unionised workers were a main concern. Women were actively involved and the lack of women supporters in the 1990's is a major problem which should be addressed, possibly by referring to the ILP's cultural and community aspects. The ILP supported constitutional reform.

What will happen when New Labour is old hat?

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has been very successful in establishing New Labour, moving his party firmly away from the old Labour party. However, he must now consider how long he should persist with this strategy. He must decide whether New Labour is a permanent reality or whether it is merely an advertising slogan which can be dropped when this is judged to be of political advantage. Blair has certainly established close links with everything new, but must also recognize that the UK has an ageing population.

This is how Labour can win

Article Abstract:

New leader of the Labour Party John Smith can provide a new identity for the party to attract more votes. Labour achieved 35% of the vote in the April 1992 elections with 271 MPs (Members of Parliament). Research showed that many CIs and C2s nearly voted Labour. They are upwardly mobile people who fear unemployment. They do not think the Labour Party is interested in the success of individuals. The party needs to reform its structure and demonstrate that it represents opportunity for all.
