Loathing for former colonial master casts 50-year shadows between Korea and Japan

Article Abstract:

There is a strong anti-Japanese sentiment in South Korea, which feels that it was extremely badly treated under Japanese rule. These two countries are in fact very similar in culture and ethnography, and would have a great deal to gain from friendly relations, but seem to find it impossible to forget the past. There are strong business links between them, but politically their relationship is still very sensitive. Indeed, the South Korean government seems to encourage xenophobia and self-pity with regard to the country's relations with Japan.

Guru whose case has put Japan on trial

Article Abstract:

The trial of Shoko Asahara, leader of Japan's Aum Supreme Truth cult, is proving very difficult to conduct. He is charged with 17 crimes, including ordering his followers to manufacture hallucinogenic drugs and release Sarin nerve gas on the Tokyo subway. He appears to be mentally unbalanced, and pays little attention to the court proceedings. The trial is now in danger of grinding to a complete halt as lawyers make attempts to bring it to a hasty conclusion.

The heat may finally be off Japan

Article Abstract:

The recent fall of the yen on Japanese foreign exchange markets is one of a number of recent indications that Japan's economy may be starting to revive. The government has finally decided to take action to deal with the bad debt problem, and the country's export industry is now more streamlined and ready to face the future. There are still challenges to be faced, but the prospects now look more positive.
