MacGregor urged to put commuters first

Article Abstract:

The Second Reading debate on the bill for privatising British Coal and British Rail unusually comes before the White Paper on the railways' future. Mr Robert Adley, Conservative MP for Christchurch and an authority on railways stated that British Rail transported 2 million passengers a day including 458,000 London commuters. He said that privatisation may not be suitable for British Rail as it is a people industry unlike gas and electricity. Mr John MacGregor, Secretary of State for Transport reported record investment in British Rail of about 1 billion pounds sterling in 1991-1992 and 1.5 billion pounds sterling expected in 1992-1993.

Major warns of disaster if conflict widens

Article Abstract:

The present war in Bosnia does not directly affect the UK's interests, but a wider conflict across the Balkans certainly would, according to prime minister John Major. The UK must do all it can to prevent such a war, and should not give into to the Bosnian Serbs, especially since they have taken hostages. His views are being strongly opposed by some Conservative backbenchers.
