Major squares up to Tory critics

Article Abstract:

British Prime Minister John Major announced that an EC summit declaration of intent on subsidiarity would be sufficient for the Cabinet to re-submit the Maastricht treaty by Christmas 1992. The summit will be held in Birmingham on Oct 16 1992. The details could be negotiated afterwards. Mr Major affirmed his support for Chancellor Norman Lamont and stated that sterling would not rejoin the exchange rate mechanism for the time being. The ratification Bill would be on the Statute Book within one year.

Dare Major sack ministers?

Article Abstract:

John Horam, UK minister for health, and education minister James Paice have both spoken out against the official Conservative party line on the European single currency. The former has stated that he is opposed to the national currency being replaced by the euro, while the latter has stated his belief that the UK and Europe are not ready for a single currency. Their stance puts Prime Minister John Major in a very difficult position and reinforces the Labour party's claim that he is a weak leader.

New Labour motors home: Blair sees Wirral by-election as the writing on the wall for Major

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party has lost the seat of Wirral South to the Labour party, having held the seat with a majority of 8,183 at the 1992 election. However, the Conservatives feel that this is not necessarily a sign of what will happen in the forthcoming general election. They claim that public opinion polls are overstating the Labour party's lead and that the Labour vote will not be as high at the general election.
