Mass appeal

Article Abstract:

Beethoven's Mass in D, Op 123, known as 'Missa Solemnis,' was first performed in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1824. Its composition had caused many problems for Beethoven, but he never experienced a full performance. The work has generally been overshadowed by the Ninth Symphony, and some observers have dismissed it as unapproachable and untypical of Beethoven. It certainly has an unusual mixture of styles and procedures from different periods, and it sometimes appears that Beethoven became obsessive about providing appropriate musical imagery. The work seems in many ways to be a reflection of Beethoven's personal faith.

A woman of new importance

Article Abstract:

Musician Elisabeth Lutyens, who was born in 1906, died in Apr 1983, notorious for outspoken anti-semitism and homophobia. She was trained in Paris, France, and at the Royal College, London, England, but did not develop her 12-tone technique until inspired by Webern. She supported four children and an often unemployed second husband, Edward Clark. She had a nervous breakdown and tuberculosis. Her vast output of vocal and instrumental chamber music amounted to 160 works.

The first of the New Romantics

Article Abstract:

It has been debated as to whether Beethoven should be regarded as a Romantic or a Classical composer. In general he is considered to be a Classicist, but his lesser known composition 'An die ferne Geliebte' could only be labelled as Romantic.
