Mining union's unlikely commercial ally
Article Abstract:
In 1989, Robin Meeks of the Meeks family, previously known for its reputation of strike breaking during the 1984 pit strikes as National Plant and Transport plc, formed Mining Skills Ltd. The Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM), using the name Kiterange Ltd, bought 49% of the shareholding for 20,000 pounds sterling. Profits amounted to more than four times the original investment within the first year. Profits expected in 1993 by the UDM will be lost due to money being moved between bank accounts without the UDM's knowledge.
