Mordovia rift bodes ill for Yeltsin cause

Article Abstract:

President of Mordovia Vasily Guslyannikov has appealed against the abolition of his job. Mordovia, an autonomous republic of one million people represents the challenge to presidential authority experienced by President Yeltsin. Guslyannikov was elected in Dec 1991 but the economy collapsed and the Supreme Soviet decided there was no need for a president. President Yeltsin issued a decree ordering the reinstatement of Mr Guslyannikov.

Yeltsin dilemma as Tajik-Afghan border war flares

Article Abstract:

Russian president Boris Yeltsin is already facing severe problems with the military conflict in Chechhya and the rapid decline of his personal popularity, and must now deal with an increasing in fighting along the Tajik-Afghan border. The border is many miles from Russian territory, but Yeltsin has stated that it is 'in effect Russia's.' It has already been reported that Russian planes have begun bombing inside Afghanistan.

Russia's ambition to be treated as America's equal has its risks

Article Abstract:

The alliance between Russia and the US which defeated Nazi Germany 50 years ago has lost a lot of its substance, but Russia would still like to believe in it. Summit meetings between the two sides are no longer as significant as they used to be, and now the US is the only true superpower. Russia resents the fact that it is now seen as only a junior partner in this alliance.
