More haste, less seed

Article Abstract:

Growing plants from seed requires a certain amount of work, but can be extremely satisfying. It is worth experimenting with a wide range of seeds, mixing reliable plants such as violas, poppies and stocks with some more unusual and unpredictable ones, such as Oenothera caespitosa, a low-growing white evening primrose. Penstemons, which have become very fashionable, do not come true from seed, but it is possible to purchase seed mixtures of penstemons which form bushy plants, around 10-in tall.

A dance to the music of thyme

Article Abstract:

Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary and thyme like hot, dry conditions, while mint grows best in cool, damp parts of the garden. Many gardeners grow the spearmint, Mentha spicata, but it is also worth considering other types of mint, such as apple mint, Mentha suaveolens. Thyme likes as much heat as possible, as heat intensifies the essential oils that give it its flavour. It is worth considering sowing parsley in summer, rather than spring, as this seems to produce a longer supply of leaves.
