More independent voices needed in UK boardrooms
Article Abstract:
Amstrad's intended appointment of two non-executive directors after institutional pressure is an example of shareholders' wish for independent information. ProNed, formed in 1983, has encouraged better representation of independent directors in public companies' boardrooms. Many directors are appointed casually and have no job profile. They are likely to agree with company executives on corporate issues. Objective advice can only be effective if there are sufficient non-executive directors on boards.
