NCT in crisis over Sainsbury sponsorship
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable controversy within the UK National Childbirth Trust after it was revealed that the charity's trustees had accepted conference sponsorship from Sainsbury's without consulting its members. This was a sensitive decision because Sainsbury's sells an own-brand milk substitute and the National Childbirth Trust has since its foundation in the 1950s been a strong supporter of breast-feeding. There is also concern about a rise in subscription rates, which could serve to reinforce the charity's image as a preserve of the middle classes.

Affluent lifestyle leading children into temptation
Article Abstract:
Smoking, gambling and taking drugs are becoming increasingly common habits among teenagers in the UK, according to a survey by the Schools Health Education Unit of Exeter University. Many are purchasing National Lottery tickets, even when they are too young to do so, and smoking has reached the highest level ever since the unit began monitoring the habits of young people in 1986. It is becoming easier for teenagers to gain access to drugs, with three-quarters of the children aged over 11 surveyed stating that they know a drug user.
