New drives for a car-free future

Article Abstract:

The UK's Architecture Foundation is running a competition designed to encourage people to think about how clean, rapid transport can be ensured in London, England, and how car-related crime can be eliminated. It is clear that dependency on the car can be reduced in many different ways. These include revitalizing public transport, encouraging cycling and walking, creating new transport systems and taking innovative new approaches to the relationship between shopping, work, leisure and housing. Architect Norman Foster believes that London has the potential to become a city with the lowest levels of traffic.

All a tram has to do is travel faster than 6mph - London's rush-hour traffic speed - and the tortoise is ahead of the hare

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly widely accepted in the UK that trams could be the ideal solution to urban transport problems. Trams can carry more people than buses, and need only travel faster than six miles an hour to be a faster form of transport than the car in congested urban environments. Transport policy in Manchester, England, for example, is now placing strong emphasis on the use of trams, and trams have been suggested for the West End of London, England, too. In Hanover, Germany, trams have been commissioned from British designer Jasper Morrison.
