Nigerian minorities claim oil wealth as stolen birthright
Article Abstract:
The recent executions of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other civil rights activists in Nigeria have served to highlight the claims of minority groups in Nigeria. The plight of the Ogoni people has now received international coverage, and it is hoped that this will also raise awareness about other minorities in the country. They feel that multinational oil companies and the government, which is dominated by majority tribes, are robbing them of the income from the country's oil reserves, to which they believe themselves to be entitled.

Old timers put Eritrea's trains back on the rails
Article Abstract:
Eritrea's rail network, which was begun in 1887 and played a key role in the country's history, was virtually destroyed during the years of fighting with Ethiopia. However, reconstruction work began in 1996, with many of those involved being former railway workers who have been in retirement for some time. Workers are undertaking all tasks themselves, as there are no funds available to use overseas contractors. So far, they have managed to lay 26 miles of track inland from the port of Massawa.
