No such thing as a free lunch?

Article Abstract:

The UK Home Office is studying a report from the Law Commission which contains recommendations and a draft Bill to modernize the law of corruption. It is possible that new anti-corruption legislation will be introduced in the next session of Parliament. The Commission has put forward four new offences: performing functions corruptly, corruptly conferring, corruptly obtaining and receipt by an agent of a benefit which consists of, or comes from, an advantage. Some observers believe that there will still be uncertainties regarding corruption and corporate entertaining.

Trial by media: watching for prejudice

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common for media coverage of high-profile trials to breach the Contempt of Court Act 1981, according to some observers. The Attorney General is taking no action to prevent this, and the 'due process' of law is therefore increasingly in danger. The recent examples of cases which have collapsed because media coverage made it impossible to undertake a fair trial indicate that it is now time to consider how the rights of a free press can be balanced against the right of an individual to a fair trial.
