Nothing less than a united kingdom at stake in Scottish and Welsh polls

Article Abstract:

The first elections to the new Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, Scotland, to take place on May 6, 1999, will have an extremely significant impact on the future of the UK. It seems likely that the Labour party will become the largest party in the Scottish Parliament, but the Scottish National Party will probably form a large, powerful opposition. Government ministers believe that the establishment of new assemblies for Scotland and Wales will eventually prompt calls for elected assemblies in England.

Bitter and bruised, he feels betrayed by all the mutterings against him

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has clashed with Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott over the government's attitude towards the public sector. Blair indicated that workers in the public sector were resisting change, while Prescott felt that this stance would further alienate the Labour party's traditional supporters. Some observers believe that Prescott is also becoming very frustrated about criticism of his handling of transport policy.
