On a wing and an echo

Article Abstract:

Latest information technology is giving researchers a more detailed insight into the extremely sophisticated way in which bats navigate. Research undertaken at the University of Leeds, England, indicates that the different frequencies contained in a single frequency modulation echolocation call give the bat different forms of information, including an object's shape and its location. Sophisticated electronics are being used to test the theory that a bat identifies potential prey with the lower-frequency part of its call, then uses the higher-frequency part of the call to locate the prey precisely.

The Day of the Aphids

Article Abstract:

Research being undertaken at the University of York, England, into aphid biology could provide some valuable information about how to prevent aphids causing extensive damage to commercial crops. It has already been established that aphids contain around 10 million bacteria in their body cavity and that these bacteria are vital to aphid growth and reproduction. Furthermore, it appears that the bacteria synthesize essential amino acids for the aphids.
