One grand crisis in academe

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable political conflict in the UK over the decision by government ministers to exempt Scottish students at Scottish universities from tuition fees for the fourth year of their courses, while their English, Welsh and Northern Irish counterparts must pay up to 1,000 pounds sterling. This conflict could cause substantial difficulties for higher education budgets from Oct 1998. The National Union of Students believes that students should not be charged different amounts on the basis of where they live, and is now seeking legal advice.
