One step back, two forward

Article Abstract:

Igor Stravinsky began composing a new ballet for Balanchine set in the form of a dance contest in autumn 1953, having had the initial idea in 1948. However, 'Agon,' the resulting work, was not performed until 1957. It lasts only 23 minutes, but contains 18 dance numbers. It is ostensibly based on early 17th century French court dances, but contains many other elements, including neo-Baroque rhythms and neo-Medieval cadences. It comes across as almost a history of music, and this is what unites the work.

Article Abstract:

The evolution of the two versions of Igor Stravinsky's 'Symphonies of Wind Instruments' is discussed. The two versions are quite similar in overall structure and content. However, almost all the chords in the first version, a very harmonic piece, were respaced and rebalanced in the second version.
