Out of the classroom, into the fire

Each year Education Business Partnerships offers 10% of teachers in an area placements in companies. In Hertfordshire, England 6% of teachers went on placements to British Aerospace, the Fire Service, Tesco, and to children's publisher David Bennett Books. The teachers use the experience to help develop children's skills. Tesco gave materials and personnel for English and technology. British Aerospace involved children working on building parts of an aeroplane, learning about structures, history and transport.

The UK's 1997 National Libraries Week has covered a wide range of events, including an interactive Living Library exhibition in London, England, and special children's events. Some 20 libraries are to stay open all night on Nov 8, 1997, and a number will provide breakfast. Special attractions will include line-dancing, Irish dancing, poetry workshops, rock music, a brass band, folk singing and author visits. Some libraries are also experimenting with Sunday opening.

Dig out your dancing shoes for a stomping good cause

Article Abstract:

The Day of Dance event, which is held twice a year in Saltaire, Yorkshire, has raised a great deal of money for Oxfam and other charities. Volunteers provide food, and dance teachers give their time for nothing. Many local people attend the workshops, which cover a wide range of dance styles, including French jive, rock'n'roll, Israeli folk dance and circle dancing. Each workshop costs 3.50 pounds sterling in advance, or 4 pounds sterling on the day.
