Paying for the letter of the law

Article Abstract:

The court system requires lawyers to attend in person for matters which could be dealt with by post, which would be much cheaper. Provincial judges are not specialists, but they should be if a first-class service is to be offered. Ordinary people should be able to obtain reasonable legal services, but county courts have no principles of service. Industrial tribunals set a better example. Standard fees in magistrate's courts mean lawyers give limited time to each case, to the client's disadvantage.

An extra dash of public spirit at the Bar

Bar Council chairman-elect John Rowe QC specialises in criminal fraud, personal injury and medical negligence. He practices in Greater Manchester, England, although he is based in London. He will be investigating free advice and representation for people not entitled to legal aid, and the problem of court delays and expenses. His schedule also covers continuing education, training and equal opportunities in the profession. He does not believe in multi-disciplinary partnerships for barristers.

Sex discrimination at the Bar: guilty as charged

Article Abstract:

The Bar Council and the Lord Chancellor's department commissioned a report on sex discrimination at the bar. It provides evidence of unequal treatment between the sexes. Traditional selection procedures limit women's opportunities. Although 20% of independent barristers are women only 41 of 760 Queen's Counsels are women. Men more often work in commercial law and women in family law, which is less well paid. Professional management practices and systematic selection criteria would help.
