Why the prosecution just can't win
Article Abstract:
The recent acquittal of two police officers charged with the unlawful killing of a deportee highlights the problems which the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) faces when bringing prosecutions against police officers. Some observers state that the CPS is unwilling to bring such cases, and that the prosecution is often conducted in a less searching way when such cases are actually brought. In contrast, other observers believe that the police are frequently singled out for excessively harsh punishment.

Over one hurdle in the race to the Bar
Article Abstract:
The best way to overcome prejudice within the Bar is to tackle it from inside, according to black barrister David Lammy. He has already learned to overcome discrimination with persuasion and determination, and believes that the best way to cope with it is to come to terms with the particular institution in which it exists. He welcomes the fact that he has not found himself pushed towards the areas of law traditionally linked with ethnic minorities, although he is not seeking to deny his roots.
