The UK's traditional universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge, are likely to see a decline in their pool of potential applicants if they do not start to offer courses which are at least superficially appealing. Many potential entrants to higher education are attracted to courses such as media studies or political studies, but there is less interest in subjects such as maths, physics and history. Some observers feel that it is acceptable for these institutions to remain traditionalist, while others seek to create a more socially representative body of undergraduates.

Do today's public rituals hinder our understanding of war?

Article Abstract:

The First World War continues to attract a great deal of attention, even though there are now few people left alive who were actually directly involved in this conflict or affected by it. It is important to be aware that remembering the First World War, which is still accorded great significance in the UK, is not actually the same as understanding it. Remembrance services tend to foster the assumption that those who were killed in the First World War died for a good reason, but it is possible to raise serious doubts about this assumption.
