Planners turning screws on the West Bank
Article Abstract:
Israeli military authorities attempt to limit development in 300 Arab villages to create precedents for boundary decisions. Israel originally created the nationalised planning programme in 1981. Ownership of the land taken by Israel in 1967 is the major issue in the negotiations with Palestinians which ended in Nov 1992. Villagers in al-Yamoun challenge the policy through an Israeli occupation appeals procedure. Houses built without licence are demolished, resulting in overcrowded living conditions in the village centre.

West Bank talks in jeopardy after Israeli shootings
Article Abstract:
Violent anti-Israeli and anti-American protests have followed the accidental killing of three Palestinian policemen by Israeli soldiers in Gaza. Palestine Liberation Organisation chairman Yasser Arafat has tried to calm the crowds, describing the policemen as 'martyrs.' However, the killings may fuel dissent within Arafat's police force, and there is likely to be greater distrust at diplomatic level.
