Planting for architecture
Article Abstract:
Plants on a roof terrace tend to be on show all the time, and must therefore be selected very carefully. It is important to have a planting theme and to take into account the shape of the individual plants. It may be worth using large, simple planting boxes which can take more than one large plant, rather than having large numbers of smaller pots. A terrace which is exposed to wind or gets very hot in summer is not the best place for raising small plants, so it is better to buy large specimens from the outset.

Oi guv, wanna buy a lovely five-foot privet?
Article Abstract:
Theft from gardens has become an increasingly serious problem over the last 10 years. The National Trust, which has many antique urns, statues and items of furniture in its gardens, has been a particular target. It is thought that goods worth at least 70 million pounds sterling are now stolen from gardens every year, with the most common targets being plants, tools and containers. Police believe that there is now a large network of small thieves feeding one or more main handlers.

Gasping under the privet
Article Abstract:
Hedges can dominate small gardens, so it is important to trim them regularly to keep them under control. Plants such as ferns and hostas can look effective along the bottom of a hedge, although some hedges can leave the soil very dry. It is worth considering scented plants for any areas near a window, but it is important not to select varieties which grow too rapidly. Some space could also be allocated to a sitting out area.
