Portrait of the artist's wife as a young lady
Article Abstract:
Atkinson Grimshaw was born in 1836 and worked as a clerk until his marriage at which time painting changed from a hobby to his profession. He lived in Leeds and there was considerable demand for his talents, the population of that town doubling from his birth to age 40. He exhibited his work at the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society and at the National Exhibition of Works of Art in 1868. He prospered and he, his wife Fanny and their children, of whom she had 15, lived in a magnificent stone manor to the east of the town. This building, Knostrop Old Hall, was demolished in 1960.

Camellias: all or nothing
Article Abstract:
Camellias are extremely attractive plants, but can be quite difficult to grow properly. They require an acid soil between pH5 and pH6.5, and the soil must also be rich in humus. They do not thrive at all in draughty spots, and the soil must be moist, but not too wet. There are many different varieties available, but a large number are too tender to grow outside successfully in the UK. It is best to select varieties of Camellia x williamsii and C japonica.

The fruit of Christmas
Article Abstract:
It is now possible to obtain oranges easily at any time of year, but for many Britons oranges are still closely associated with Christmas. In the past, oranges were often a special Christmas treat, and were not eaten at any other time of year. It is possible to grow orange trees in the UK, but they need quite careful handling. It is important to let the plants dry out between each watering and to inspect them carefully for pests.
