Article Abstract:

British Prime Minister John Major said on Oct 20, 1992 that Britain would have a strategy for growth, but this was a change from the economic plans given during the April 1992 election campaign. Previous interviews are quoted in which Mr Major explained his views against devaluation. He believed it would lead to higher inflation.

It includes a 5.2 billion pounds sterling windfall tax to produce finance for a welfare-to-work programme for the long-term unemployed, as well as a reduction of 2% in the main rate of Corporation Tax. Financial markets reacted to the Budget with a certain degree of disappointment, as taxes on consumers were not increased by as much as had been anticipated.
