Puccini opera travels home to Peking

Article Abstract:

A $15 million production of Puccini's opera 'Turandot,' which tells the story of a Chinese Emperor's daughter who had her suitors beheaded if they were unable to answer her riddles, is to be staged in the Forbidden City, Peking, China. The production, directed by Zhang Yimou, has taken four years to prepare. Great attention has been given to authentic detail, and this means that ticket prices are very high. The production involves around 350 artists and technicians, with three casts of principals for the nine performances.

Chen Xitong, former head of the Communist party in Peking, China, has been sentenced to 16 years in jail after having been found guilty of embezzlement, dereliction of duty and accepting gifts. He spent 12 years as mayor and then party secretary for Peking, overseeing an administration which is thought to have siphoned off almost 18 billion yuan. He is particularly unpopular among ordinary people because of his strong support for the shooting of pro-democracy campaigners in Jun 1989.
