Raiders of the Jurassic Park

Article Abstract:

Landowners in the US are beginning to realize that they could derive considerable financial benefits from the discovery of dinosaur remains on their land. Private collectors will often pay very large sums of money for dinosaur bones, and this is encouraging many more people to try to discover dinosaur remains. Many landowners are now looking to charge very high prices to allow people to dig on their land. The increasing commercialization of this work means that it may soon be financially impossible for most academics to dig on private land.

The big boys' blood money

Article Abstract:

US concern Biocyte has received a patent from the European Patent Office which gives it the rights to use any 'stem cells' from umbilical blood. The company would be permitted to grant a licence to anybody who wishes to use use stem cells for a medical procedure, and could even demand a royalty. This development has attracted strong opposition from European doctors and scientists. They feel that the patent is too broad and that it in effect commercializes human life.
