Sewing up the market

Article Abstract:

The textile and clothing industries are a key element of Turkey's economy. Indeed, these industries are regarded as having saved the country from the 1994 economic crisis. Textile exports increased by more than 10% in 1997 from 1996 to $2.8 billion, with sales abroad of readywear clothing rising 14% to more than $7 billion. There has been a sharp increase in output of artificial and synthetic fibres over recent years.

The shows must go on

Article Abstract:

Very difficult issues had to be addressed when deciding whether to go ahead with London Fashion Week in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the US. Some observers felt that fashion, regarded as rather frivolous, should not be presented at a time of great tragedy. Others argued that cancelling the event would be making a political statement, which is not appropriate for fashion designers.
