Roger Stott

Post Office engineer and politician Roger Stott became a deck boy in the Merchant Navy after leaving school at 14. He spent several years sailing up and down the China coast, but returned to the UK after contracting malaria in Africa. He was recruited by Post Office Telephones, and joined the Post Office Engineering Union and the Labour Party. He was elected to the local council in Rochdale, England, at the age of 23, and in 1973 became Labour MP for Westhoughton, England.

Politician George Thomas began his working life as a teacher, and continued teaching until the age of 36. He became Labour MP for part of Cardiff, Wales, in 1945, and later took a wide range of political posts, including Minister of State at the Welsh Office between 1966 and 1967 and Minister of State at the Commonwealth Office between 1967 and 1968. He was Speaker of the House of Commons between 1976 and 1983, and Chairman of the Bank of Wales between 1985 and 1991.

Sir Ray Powell
Article Abstract:
Politician and trade union official Ray Powell was born in Treorchy, Wales, in 1928. He began his working life as a fireman for British Rail but in 1951 became a shop assistant. He set up his own butcher's business in 1956 and became increasingly involved with the Union of Shop Distributive and Allied Workers.
