Pet industry suffers from tight monetary policy. In June 1980 higher sales did not bring more profits. Livestock dealers hope for less regulation under President Reagan. Demand for birds and puppies may bring higher prices, since diseases and hot weather interfered with supply.

Large, expensive birds are not selling as well in 1981 as previous years, but some dealers in good locations report success. Domestic breeding may be the only source in five years, since U.S.D.A. quarantine rules limit commerce in imported birds.
