Sit-ins are long gone, Mr Patten

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State for Education John Patten announced that funding for students' unions would be limited to core functions. Catering, welfare and accommodation will be publicly funded and students may pay for extra services such as sports and societies. Hull University is described, where students, already in financial hardship, would be deprived of the sports centre and nursery and the community care programme would end.

Welcome feeling as BB2 softens its image

Article Abstract:

BBC2's new image has been successful in attracting back viewers who had turned to Channel 4. Under the influence of Michael Jackson, who became controller of BBC2 in Apr 1993, it has become less 'forbidding,' showing programmes which are of greater interest to the general public, rather than programmes dealing only with obscure topics. Particular efforts are now being made to attract younger, female viewers.

The pop-picking saviour of Fab FM

Article Abstract:

Radio 1 has lost many listeners over the last few years, but has recently started to see a revival, with audiences rising by 600,000 to 11.1 million in the second quarter of 1995. This is mainly due to the work of Matthew Bannister, the station's controller, who has won respect for his reorganisation of Radio 1. He has been criticised for making rapid changes, but believes that this was necessary.
