Smith urges radical change

Article Abstract:

Mr Smith, prospective Labour Party leader, launched a radical policy review on Apr 30 1992 after a fourth Labour defeat. He proposed universal benefits and a fairer society and suggested a 'Special Commission on Social Justice' to examine income and wealth distribution, social welfare policy and taxation. He promised incorporation of the European Convention and a Freedom of Information Act, a Scottish Parliament, a Welsh Assembly, regional government and a review of the first-past-the-post electoral system.

Labour faces period of tough questioning

Article Abstract:

The government's problems with the sterling crisis deflected the Labour Party from resolving new policies at its conference. Leader John Smith will chair the new joint policy committee delaying internal changes except those needed to win an election. Union links, electoral reform and tax and benefits policy will be decided on during 1992/3. The conference decided to uphold resolutions on Europe. The resignation of Bryan Gould may make Mr Smith's job simpler.

Two traditions, one future

Article Abstract:

The Liberal Party believes in individuals' rights and morality whereas the Labour Party believes in collective solutions to society's problems. Historically they prevent one another's progress because of group loyalties; if formed in 1992, only one of the parties would be necessary. Their policies are getting closer. The Institute for Public Policy Research publication 'The Welfare of Citizens' analyses a new approach.
