So much more than just a game

Article Abstract:

Sport is playing a significant role in allowing Croatia, a small country which remains isolated, to gain international recognition. The country's football team has performed very well in the 1998 World Cup, giving Croatia some international fame. There is also a sense in which the national football team is regarded as the only real opposition party to President Franjo Tudjman's authoritarianism. Croatia's national ambitions and frustrations are closely linked with the performance of its football team, and this could bring serious ethnic tension, regardless of the team's performance.

Up to 100 feared dead as Nato bombers strike Kosovo village

Article Abstract:

At least 79 ethnic Albanians have been killed in a Nato bomb attack on the village of Korisa, near Prizren, Kosovo, Yugoslavia, according to the Serb authorities. Serbia appears to be confident that it has evidence of a Nato atrocity, as reflected in reports that Western reporters are being transported to the village. Nato claims that the Serbs are using the remaining ethnic Albanians in Kosovo as decoys, forcing them into places Nato is believed likely to strike, such as factories.
