A degree of sexism at Oxford

Article Abstract:

In May 1993 dons at Oxford University, England, revolted against sexual discrimination in academic promotions. Directions to ensure all eligible candidates applied were not followed. A consultative document explains methods of underwriting equal opportunities in universities. As readerships go to those who have conducted research, more should be done to ensure women have time to do research. Flexible working arrangements and child care provision are important.

We want to teach. Who needs carrots?

Article Abstract:

The university and college lecturers' union Natfhe sent details of introducing performance-related pay (PRP) to the new universities in 1993. Staff at several universities agreed to share any pay received for performance equally between them. Some universities have agreed to use the money for PRP for other purposes. PRP is incompatible with academics' ambitions: they prefer research, teaching and seeing students progress to financial reward.
