South Africa buries its past
Article Abstract:
South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission is now starting to make a breakthrough in its efforts to apportion guilt for the brutal acts carried out under apartheid. This follows a considerable period of time during which its work was hampered by the criminal courts. Conflict between the courts and the commission about how to deal with the perpetrators of apartheid violence highlights very clearly the inability of South Africa as a whole to decide how to deal with its past. There are very mixed views still about the relative values of justice and truth, and this is hampering true reconciliation.

SA wine growers sip at last chance saloon
Article Abstract:
A European boycott of South African wines is not the best way to tackle the problems of black workers being employed in the industry on very low wages, according to South African wine writer John Platter. He has himself been very critical of some practices in the South African wine industry, but feels that a boycott would obscure the real issues and be very counter-productive. Some observers report that wine growers deliberately encourage alcoholism among poorly-paid black workers in order to ensure that they are too dependent to leave the industry.
