Sun strokes and inner lights

Article Abstract:

Novelist A.S. Byatt has always been interested in painting, feeling that painting, unlike writing, is a science as well as an art. She gives considerable attention to the world of light in 'Elementals,' her third collection of short stories since the late 1980s. She places strong emphasis on solitude, believing that it is only possible to relate well to people if you exist when you are alone. She does not regard her work as creative, feeling that writing is a form of work that allows the world to be considered from a different angle.
