The country's architectural enforcer

Article Abstract:

The UK Government is reviewing the activities of The Royal Fine Art Commission, a quango of property developers, artists, historians and architects led by Lord St John of Fawsley which has official power over architectural planning in the UK. The Government aims to establish a 'champion of architecture' and may abolish the Commission, which has been accused of favouring a certain architectural style. The Commission has just eight staff members and a budget of 700,000 pounds sterling per year.

Article Abstract:

Trade unions have a role to play in the UK government's modernizing project, according to Secretary of State for Trade and Industry Peter Mandelson. He regards trade unions as being partners with the government in establishing a fair society. He also sees trade unions as an integral part of the business world. He feels that it is particularly important for trade unions to talk realistically about the economy and to avoid using old slogans and reviving old demands.
