Searching for a cure for the silent killer of women

Article Abstract:

Breast cancer kills almost 14,000 women a year in the UK, but experts have still not made much progress with identifying the possible causes of this disease. The only element of diet known to increase the risk of breast cancer is alcohol. There is little consensus on the best way to treat breast cancer, but it is now known that the hormonal drug tamoxifen can prevent recurrence of the disease in post-menopausal women. This drug may also prevent first cancers arising in women at high risk.

There's a killer on the run...

Article Abstract:

Meningitis is one of the most serious diseases present in the UK. It can kill extremely quickly, and this makes early diagnosis and immediate treatment vital. There has been a significant rise in the number of cases of meningitis over recent years, but the death rate has fallen. Scientists are making progress in the fight against meningitis, and have revealed that there are good prospects for developing a vaccine against the Group C strain of the disease.

The world's fattest nations are those with biggest bottom lines

Article Abstract:

Obesity is becoming a serious problem worldwide, according to statistics presented at the International Congress on Obesity in Paris, France. There has been a rise of between 10% and 40% in cases of obesity in Europe since the late 1980s, with similar rises also being seen in the Far East, Australia and the US. Obesity is most closely linked with a sedentary lifestyle and a high fat diet, both of which rise as a country's prosperity increases.
