Article Abstract:

There have been a number of developments recently that have prompted a re-assessment of several traditional assumptions about the banking industry. The merger of Union Bank of Switzerland and Swiss Bank Corp has indicated that Switzerland will not necessarily always have three large banks, as has been believed for many years. It is also becoming clear that it is not necessary to be a bank to gain a strong presence in banking.

Article Abstract:

It is quite possible that those who believe that UK economic growth will slow down in 1999 and that there will then be a return to trend growth will be proved correct.
