The last oik of the British Empire

Article Abstract:

The recent conviction of former Barings trader Nick Leeson, who must now serve six and a half years in jail in Sinapore, is particularly significant because it highlights the final demise of British influence in the Far East. UK banks have for many years been trying to rebuild their positions in the Far East, and many City experts still see the Pacific Rim as the focal point of the economic future. However, these banks will not be able to play a key role in economic development in the Far East if they continue to operate in the way which has been revealed by the Barings scandal.

The dangers of a spoon-fed diet

Article Abstract:

Almost one-third of all households in the UK now receive one or more income-related benefits, and the Department of Social Security's budget has rise by 78% in real terms since 1979. The Conservative party has continually stressed its commitment to reducing state support, but has clearly failed to do so. It is now time for a wide-reaching reform of the benefits system, possibly returning to a system of constributions-funded universal benefits.

Drivel that deserved to self-deconstruct

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable media speculation about the real reasons behind the decision to cease publication of the 'Modern Review.' Most speculation has centred on political and sexual issues, ignoring the fact that the publication could have folded simply because it was of poor quality, and therefore had financial difficulties. It focused on trivial issues, and dealt largely with the ephemeral, thus failing to attract loyal readers.
