The secret service, open to question

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable progress over recent years towards establishing greater openness and accountability within the ranks of the UK intelligence services. It is now time to review the role of the intelligence services, especially as it is likely that the Labour party, which has very little experience of intelligence activities, will come to power in spring 1997. This will inevitably involve a thorough review of the UK's role in the world, as only in this way will it be possible to assess intelligence requirements for the 21st century.

Goodbye to the 'good chaps.' (Nolan report will establish new views on standards in public life)

Article Abstract:

The Nolan report on standards in public life has introduced a new climate in which people will be more prepared to challenge the understandings which have traditionally prevailed in public life. It is now likely that outsiders will start to regulate the activities of government officials, and it is possible that a written constitution for a range of public activities will eventually emerge. Such a move would go a long way towards reassuring the general public.

Don't waste your time, Lord Nolan

Article Abstract:

The committee headed by Lord Nolan is wasting its time by looking at the finances of political parties. No democratic system will be able to change the tradition by which people have the right to give their money privately to the political party which they support, and should not try to do so. If the Nolan committee persists in investigating this issue, then there is a danger that the UK will move towards state funding of political parties.
