The terrorism of total contempt

Article Abstract:

Recent events in Japan, where the Aum Shinri Kyo cult has received considerable public attention with its predictions of cataclysmic events, give an interesting insight into the psychology of terrorism. It has been shown that society can only defend itself by relying on the better nature and self-interest of the terrorists. Most terrorist groups do not have total contempt for human life, but Aum may be an exception, as it predicts that the world will end in 1997.

Out of gags? Try Oscar Wilde

Article Abstract:

Oscar Wilde's play 'The Importance of Being Earnest' was described by its author as a 'trivial comedy,' but has come to be widely known in the 100 years since it was first performed. It has been a great commercial success, and is regarded by theatre directors as artistically safe, as it contains no sex, violence, bad language or politics. Modern audiences can identify with its language, and it is cheap to perform, requiring few sets and actors.

Farewell to the greasepaint tendency

Article Abstract:

Former Labour party leader Neil Kinnock had close links with showbiz personalities, making them a central part of his campaigning and fund-raising efforts. However, current party leader Tony Blair has tended to distance himself from such public figures, reflecting a general trend in western politics. In general, Tony Blair is now being very careful about the company he keeps.
