The weightless economy is on track for victory

Article Abstract:

International trade is set to be increasingly in intangibles, rather than goods and services. This is demonstrated by plans by Bernie Ecclestone to float his Formula One business on the stock market. This has no physical products or stocks, no buildings or shops and very few employees. Its value, which has been set at 2.4 billion pounds sterling, lies solely in the fact that it controls the rights to television coverage of grand prix races. Similarly, the weight of US output is currently only a little higher than it was in the late 19th century, but its value is 20 times greater.

Is this the Japanese Tony Blair?

Article Abstract:

The most popular politician in Japan is Naoto Kan, leader of the Democratic Party of Japan. Kan openly admires UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and believes that Japan must undergo radical change. His policies include decentralization of power by permitting local government to have more independence in allocating resources. Blair's influence on Japanese politics is seen most clearly in terms of style, with voters preferring politicians who seem approachable and stylish, and in terms of a model which stresses what politicians can do and what they cannot do.

Separating signals from noise

Article Abstract:

Financial markets are currently confused and unsettled, partly because of the large quantities of poor quality political, financial and economic information which are being released. The main uncertainties include the UK political scene, the direction of the European Union, the balance of the UK economy and the possibility of a recession in the US. Against this background, it is hard to judge which issues are really important.
