Article Abstract:

Stephen Layton, organist at Temple Church in London, England, feels very close links with the English choral tradition. However, he does not wish to limit his development in other areas of music-making. He has no plans to record with the Temple Church choristers until at least 2000, as he feels that it is unwise to record with a group with which he is not yet fully familiar. He is aware that recording is regarded as a key sign of success, but has some reservations about the editing process involved in making a perfect recording.

Article Abstract:

Both the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO) are due to perform soon as part of the promenade concert season at the Royal Albert Hall. The EUYO's standard is now regarded as similar to that of the best orchestras in the world, with the players, aged 14-23, being extremely experienced and flexible enough to deal with many different conductors. At the EUYO, entry is conditional only upon ability, while NYO members must contribute towards the cost of each orchestra course.

Article Abstract:

It is vital to acknowledge that improvisation was very common during the Baroque period, according to violinist and Academy of Ancient Music co-director Andrew Manze. Many early music performances are of a very high standard, but they lack a live element. He has begun to question why rules were drawn up to limit improvisation, and spends some time each day improvising. His most recent recording features sonatas by 17th century Italian violin virtuoso Giovanni Antonio Pandolfi, whose work calls for a spontaneous playing style.
