Things that make you go oooh! bah! ugh! and pish!

Article Abstract:

Actors show their skill when the script calls for exclamations and groans. These vary in expression according to the character portrayed. Robin Bailey uses a variety of noises expressing irritation and self-pity in Pinero's 'Trelawney of the Wells.' Donald Sinden is one of the best actors at this in both comedy and tragedy. Sara Crowe portrays the feelings of the inarticulate, embarrassed Jackie in Coward's 'Hay Fever' with squeaks and gurgles. Tragedy is harder to interpret but Brian Cox conveys heartbreak as King Lear where the script directs howling.

Beside himself

Article Abstract:

'Dejavu', the sequel to 'Look Back in Anger', at the Comedy Theatre, London in Jun 1992, is directed by Tony Palmer in his first theatre production. He is well-known for music documentaries and opera productions, but John Osborne asked him to direct his play. It is a subtle, light-hearted tragedy describing modern life, which makes numerous references to literature. It has been cut from four hours to two and a half. Palmer explains his philosophy of directing.

Hands across the water

Article Abstract:

Terry Hands, former director and chief executive of the RSC, is one of a number of leading figures in the theatrical world who have chosen to develop their careers abroad. He is still RSC emeritus director, but now works mainly on a freelance basis, and is soon to visit Brussels and Norway. He believes that there is little opportunity for expansion or experiment in the UK, which is currently in a period of consolidation.
